The Carb Dilemma

Are you confused about Carbs? From my experience, YES, most people are confused about carbohydrates!

  • Should I go low carb?
  • No carbs?
  • Which carbs?
  • What is right for me?
  • Does it change when I exercise?

Right now, my whole family is participating in my 2-Week Challenge. One of our mini daily goals is “No Processed Carbs”.  Even though I have explained it numerous times, my kids are still confused.  They think they are not allowed any carbs.

This scenario lines up perfectly with our society!
The #1 mistake for anyone trying to lose weight is that they think they need to reduce all carbs.

This is 100% NOT true!
If you want to control cravings, feel sustained energy, and optimize your metabolism (and not damage it), you need carbs!

Ever get that ravenous feeling at the end of the day?
A common reason is because you skimped on carbs (fuel) through the day.

After exercise, do you get hangry a few hours later?
Again, most likely you did not eat enough carbs (fuel) before and after your workout.

Obviously, I am NOT encouraging you to eat tons of simple carbs, like soda, candy, bread, and pasta.
If you have a mental block about carbs, you need to follow my 3 Key Concepts!

3 Key Concepts to Clarify “The Carb Dilemma”

  1. Eat carbs evenly through the day – portion controlled at every meal and snack.  Everybody’s portions may vary depending on their size, activity level, health conditions, and stress levels.
  2. Pick complex carbs!  This means they come from nature, like brown rice, sweet potato, and fruit.  Personally, I still eat some crackers and bread that are made with whole ingredients.  Make sure to always read ingredients!
  3. Some people may have special issues that may complicate things.  For example, many people are intolerant to gluten and need to avoid these types of carbs.  Another example: If you are diabetic or insulin resistant, you would need to monitor natural sugar grams closer.

Obviously, understanding carbohydrates and balancing meals properly may not be as simple as most diets portray. To truly heal your metabolism, there are so-o-o-o many pieces to the puzzle and personalized variables.  If you need help, I am here for you.  Click here to schedule a call with me, Betsy Markle RD.
