Diet Myths

Diet MythTop 7 Nutrition Myths

1. AVOID CARBOHYDRATES TO LOSE WEIGHT

Truth: Carbohydrates are the #1 fuel source for our bodies. The key is to eat the right kind of carbohydrates, such as starchy vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and legumes. Another key is to eat the right amount of carbohydrates for your height & weight and exercise level in the right proportions throughout the day.

2. ALL FATS ARE BAD

Truth: Not all fat is created equal. There are many fats that are good for us, such as the fat in fish (omega 3 fat), avocados, nuts, seeds, eggs, olives and coconuts. In general, monitor your amount of saturated fat intake and stay away from all hydrogenated oils.  Click here to learn more about good verse bad fat.

3. WHEN A LABEL SAYS “NO TRANS-FATS”, IT’S HEALTHY

Truth: The claim “No Trans-Fats” means that the product does not contain any hydrogenated oils. However, when an unstable oil, like polyunsaturated oils (soybean, vegetable, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower) is heated, the oil becomes damaged and turns into a trans-fat. Labels fail to mention this; therefore you need to do your own research when avoiding Trans-Fats.

4. AVOID EGGS & SEAFOOD TO LOWER BLOOD CHOLESTEROL

Truth: Dietary cholesterol in eggs and seafood does not equate to blood cholesterol. In general, the true culprits for elevated blood cholesterol are hydrogenated fats, trans-fats, saturated fats, excess sugar intake, and inactivity.

5. SKIPPING MEALS WILL HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Truth: People, who skip meals, especially breakfast, tend to pack on more pounds than people who eat small frequent meals. Meal skipping slows down your metabolism, which makes weight loss more challenging.  Click here to learn about our unique approach to optimize your metabolism.

6. NUTS ARE BAD BECAUSE THEY ARE FATTENING

Truth: Nuts are nutritious because they contain protein and healthy monounsaturated oils. An average portion is the size of a small handful or 20 almonds. When eaten in the right proportions, nuts are a healthy food option that does not put on weight.

7. CARDIO IS THE BEST FORM OF EXERCISE TO LOSE WEIGHT

Truth: Cardiovascular exercise will burn immediate calories, but that does not always translate into weight loss. Cardio exercise also raises stress hormones in the body. Elevated stress hormones mixed with stressful lifestyle habits can actually create the opposite effect (weight retention around the mid-section). In general, a balanced exercise plan of resistance, calming, and cardio exercise is your best bet.
