What Helps the Immune System?

What Helps the Immune SystemEveryone is talking about the Swine Flu. With all the media coverage, the whole situation sounds pretty scary. There’s also some contagious sinus and respiratory infections being spread right now. Fortunately, there are some key steps that you can take to boost your immune system and prevent the spread of these nasty viral & bacterial infections. My chefs and nutrition consultants will be sharing their tips and recipes to help boost immune function on the Sunshine Wellness Blog for the next 2 weeks.

1. Eat Colorful Foods.
Incorporate tons of organic fruits and vegetables in your daily routine. These foods contain essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that help protect our cells from foreign invaders. See the foods that carry the most antioxidant action: Best Veggies List!

2. Make Smart Food Decisions.
Try to eat a small healthy meal or snack every 3-4 hours. When your blood sugar is stable, you will make smarter decisions and prevent sugar cravings. In order to implement a fresh food plan with small frequent meals, be aware that it is essential to plan ahead by reviewing snack & meal ideas (Healthy Snack Ideas), making a shopping list, and food shopping on a regular basis.

3. Shrug Off the Stress.
In order to boost your immune system, it is essential to minimize stress in your life. If this is not possible, then it is important that you don’t let it get to you. Make sure there are times in your daily routine when you avoid your email and phone and enjoy the time by yourself or with friends or family.

4. Try to Exercise Daily.
Exercise is a great way to boost your immune function, decrease stress, gain energy, and sleep better at night. Aim to incorporate a variety of exercises, including cardiovascular activities, resistance training (weight lifting, pilates) and calming activities (yoga, light walking, meditation).

5. Add a Few Key Supplements.
As a basic protocol, I usually recommend a pharmaceutical grade Multi and Omega 3 fish oil softgels . During cold & flu season, I always make sure to add some extra antioxidants for prevention:

Greens is a natural food supplement with phytonutrient and antioxidant power of dark greens and brightly colored fruits and vegetables. One serving has equivalent antioxidant capacity to 4 servings of vegetables.

Oxi Plus Antioxidants contains a synergistic broad spectrum of antioxidants, including 1000 mg of Vitamin C, designed to protect against free radical damage in every cell of the body.

Proflora is a powerful probiotic supplement that promotes the overall health of the immune system. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that aid in digestion and prevent the growth of foreign bacteria, fungus, and parasites.
