Prevent Getting a Cold

Prevent Getting a ColdSpring is here and Summer is right around the corner, and although this is not the time when most of us worry about catching a cold, news of the Swine Flu has most people, including myself, paranoid about getting sick.  Luckily, I have very educated friends, family, and co-workers who keep me informed about staying healthy and avoiding hype.

To stay healthy this season and ease my paranoid mind, I have started taking a once-a-day probiotic supplement that supplies my body with good bacteria, which in turn keep the bad bacteria in check and strengthen my immune system and promote good digestion.  I have also started taking a twice-daily fish oil supplement which is important for maintaining overall health.  Talk to my boss Betsy for more information on all the supplement she has available in her Wellness Store.

As for foods that keep you healthy, I always feel good when I eat a plate full of color.  The Santa Barbara Farmers Market is a great place to go pick out fresh, seasonal, delicious fruits and vegetables to add to your dinner plate.  Raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables retain the most nutrients, so a big salad for lunch, a snack, or along with your dinner is a great way to get essential vitamins and minerals into your system.  When I’m at work at Sunshine Wellness, I always try to have at least three vegetables on our Dinner Salad, and my co-worker Maria does a wonderful job of picking out beautiful and delicious veggies at the market for this exact purpose.  There are some beautiful fruits available right now as well, including berries, apricots, nectarines, peaches, and cherries.  For more ideas, check Betsy’s list of Essential Vegetables for Your Diet.
