Shocking News About the Metabolism🔅

We all assume that our metabolism slows down as we age, right? 👱🏼‍♀️👵🏼
Once we reach our 40’s and 50’s, weight just starts to creep on (even if our habits stay the same).

We also assume that women have slower metabolisms than men, correct? 👫
Women have a harder time controlling their weight, especially after pregnancies and menopause.

There was a BIG Metabolism Study (with 6,500 participants) that was published and the results are going to shock you!  I was even surprised! 😲
By the way, I gathered this information from an article in the New York Times evaluating a large study by Duke’s Dr. Herman Pontzer, as well as 80 co-authors.  Research centers studied metabolic rates via energy expenditure for over 40 years.

So, do you want to know the conclusion? 📃
They classified their data into four distinct stages of life:

  1. Infancy Age 1: 👶🏼 Calorie burning is at it’s peak, accelerating until it is 50% above the adult rate (Basically, it’s sky-high!)
  2. Age 1 – 20: 👧🏼 Metabolism gradually slows by about 3% a year (Basically, it’s still awesome but stabilizes).
  3. Age 20 – 60: 👩🏼 Metabolism holds steady.
  4. After age 60: 👵🏼 It declines by about 0.7% a year.

Once researchers controlled for body size and muscle mass, they also found no significant difference between men and women. 💪🏼

I’m no scientist and to be honest, I suck at analyzing scientific studies.  They put me to sleep! 💤
But this one seems pretty clear…  

Here are my 2 Takeaways:
👆 Scientifically, your metabolic rate shouldn’t start to truly decline till you reach the age of 60.  From 60-95, it will decline approximately 20%.
✌️  There is no big difference in metabolic rate between men and women.  Shocker!

These finding showed a clear trend but there were some big outliers in the study.
Some people displayed metabolic rates that were much higher and much lower than the average.
The scientists were perplexed by these outlier wondering what characteristics caused an extra slow (or fast) metabolism.
