Chocolate or wine cravings at night?

Do you have alcohol or sweet cravings, especially at night?  🌙🍷🍭

If so, you are definitely not alone – most of our clients struggle with this too.  

Here’s a story I hear ALL.THE.TIME:
You are trying to eat healthy throughout the day and then something takes over your body after dinner.  You know you are not hungry but you NEED a glass of wine or chocolate to satisfy you.  

Sound familiar?
In order to eliminate these cravings and gain control, we need to explore why you are struggling (you may relate to one or all the reasons).

And of course, I have lots of solutions that truly work.

  Sugar is more addictive than most illegal drugs!  If you crave sweets and lack control, then you need to minimize sugar in your diet.  It may be tough for 3-5 days but after it is out of your system, you will have better willpower. Make sure you read labels for sugar grams.  As a general rule of thumb, aim for 10 grams or less (optimally zero) at meals.  If a product tastes sweet but has no sugar, artificial sweeteners have probably been added. These sweeteners will spark more cravings so definitely avoid them. Make sure to read ingredients so you truly know what you are consuming.

💫 IS YOUR MEAL SCHEDULE SPORADIC? So many of our clients skip breakfast and don’t fuel their metabolism till later in the day.  This creates unstable blood sugar, which will always lead to cravings near the end of the day. Please eat breakfast!  And coffee with collagen does NOT count.  Aim for small frequent meals throughout your day (steady blood sugar all day long). Balance your meals and snacks!  If you limit carbs all day long, of course you will have intensified cravings at night. If your dinner is too early, you may need a healthy balanced snack before bedtime.

💫 ARE YOU BORED? Many of us snack on bad things or indulge in a cocktail at night out of habit.  Maybe you are bored or unhappy and it might bring you temporary happiness. If this is the case for you, change up your routine. Change up your routine at that tough time.  Here are some ideas:

  • take a walk 🚶🏽‍♀️
  • start an evening yoga class 🧘🏻‍♀️
  • sign-up for a creative class 🎨
  • play a game 🎲
  • call a friend 📞

Many people are just dehydrated.  Start a new healthier evening routine – Mocktail Hour.  Make a pretend cocktail with seltzer and a fresh fruit wedge or drink herbal tea.  Always use a pretty glass or mug. 🍹🍹

ARE YOU STRESSED AND NEED AN EVENING REWARD?  Many of us are overwhelmed with family and/or work.  At the end of a hard day, we feel like we deserve a cocktail or a treat.  Try some of the ideas above to change up your routine but truly, you probably need to work on the root issue – STRESS! Create more balance in your life!  I know this is not easy for most of us so here are some questions to help you pinpoint a starting point.

  • Do you take mini breaks from work?
  • Do you schedule in time for YOU every day?
  • Do you try to appreciate nature every day?
  • Do you incorporate consistent yoga and/or meditation into your life?
  • Do you have healthy morning and bedtime routines?
  • Are you able to ask for help when needed and delegate tasks on your to-do list?
  • Do you talk kindly to yourself?

To be real, most people struggle with more than one of these key triggers. 

Uncontrolled craving AND weight struggles are almost always caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits mixed with lots of stress (not handled well).
