What is Good Bacteria?

ProbioticsDid you know that our digestive tract is coated with 100 trillion bacteria? There are more bacteria in our bodies than stars in the sky. Some of these bacteria are bad but the majority of them are good bacteria, also known as probiotics. They are medically defined as organisms that promote good health and establish the right balance of intestinal bacteria. Probiotics can be found in fermented foods, like yogurt, or can be taken as a supplement. Their health benefits have been known for over a hundred years.

Health Benefits of Probiotics:

Probiotics promote the overall health of the immune system. They are extremely beneficial for treating digestive problems, intestinal stomach bugs and urinary tract infections. Probiotics prevent the overgrowth of yeast and fungus making them useful in the treatment of candida and other fungal conditions. Probiotics help promote regular bowel movements and high dosing of probiotics can resolve bouts of diarrhea.

Administering probiotics during pregnancy and breastfeeding offers a safe and effective mode of promoting the immunoprotective potential of breastfeeding and provides protection against allergies and atopic eczema during the first two years of life. Immune-boosting probiotics are beneficial for decreasing children’s susceptibility to infections and allergies.

Why do some people need to supplement with Probiotics?

I’ll try to make this simple for you. If you ever go on antibiotics, whatever the reason may be, it is absolutely essential to supplement with probiotics after the treatment to replenish all the good bacteria that were killed. This will help prevent the common yeast infections and bowel disruptions from antibiotics use. I usually recommend supplementation for at least 1 month after antibiotics.

If my clients do not consume yogurt on a regular basis, I usually recommend a low dose probiotic supplement everyday. Probiotics are like a multi-vitamin for our digestive tract. Also, sugary and processed foods feed all the bad bacteria in our digestive tract. A few studies have shown that obese people have a more bad bacteria and less good bacteria. So if your diet is filled with sugars and processed foods, it is essential to supplement with probiotics as well.

Supplement Specifics:

It is important to look for a high potency probiotic supplement with multiple strains of bacteria. I listed the Probiotic supplement that I sell below so you can compare against other products. It is important to store probiotics in a cool place.
