Collagen in your coffee… YES or NO?

“Should you add collagen powder to your coffee in the morning?”

Now that collagen powder is popular, this is a question that I hear a lot.

Most people who follow keto, know Bulletproof coffee and understand the concept…
Adding fat and protein to your coffee is intended to fuel start your day by replacing carb-heavy breakfasts.

Logically, it makes sense to bolster your coffee with bonus protein and collagen benefits.

But let’s take a step back✋…  What’s your main goal (with your health)?

A)  Do you want to fuel your metabolism so you can lose weight naturally?
B)  Or do you want to deprive your body of real fuel and trick your metabolism?   A)  Do you want to feel energized throughout the whole day?
B)  Or do you want a morning boost but then feel sluggish later in the day?

If you said YES to the A) Questions then you definitely need to read on.

Because you need to understand what’s happening in your body. Coffee is dehydrating for the body.  I like to tell my clients that every coffee equals -1 in the water department. Coffee is also an appetite suppressant.  If you drink coffee on an empty belly, it will suppress your hunger.  This morning routine (coffee, not hungry… skip breakfast) will wreck your metabolism. Now imagine bolstering your coffee with bonus protein.  This jacked-up coffee will now hold you over even longer (without real fuel, complex carbs).

Should you add collagen powder to your coffee in the morning?
The clear answer is NO.

In most situations, this tactic will trick and damage your metabolism, causing more fatigue and cravings later in the day.

If you want to optimize your metabolism, then here is a better solution. Drink water first thing in the morning (hydrate your body). Eat breakfast or a balanced snack within one hour of waking. Your breakfast should be balanced with complex carbs and protein.  This will balance your blood sugar and provide real fuel for your metabolism. If you want coffee, then drink it with your breakfast so you won’t suppress your appetite.

There is one situation that I agree with collagen in your coffee…

If you are eating a vegetarian breakfast that is light in protein, like oatmeal or cold cereal, this is the perfect time for a protein boost.  Your metabolism would appreciate adding some collagen to your coffee at this meal.
