What to eat BEFORE a Workout

PRE-WORKOUT NUTRITION GUIDELINES

#1 Complaint:  “I workout early and don’t like to eat before my workout”

💡Solution:  It is ESSENTIAL that you eat before your workout in order to provide fuel for your muscles.  Without a pre-workout snack, your workout will suffer, and your metabolism will slow down.   On the other hand, if you eat too soon before a workout, food may not have time to digest which may cause cramps.  Therefore, aim to eat a balanced snack around 1 hour prior to your workout.  If this is not possible, have a small portion (around 4 oz) of smoothie right before your workout. 💪🏻

Pre-Workout Meal Ideas:

💡 Balance:  To minimize cramping, consume simple carbohydrates before a workout because they will burn faster providing quick energy.  Adding a little protein will help to sustain energy longer.

💡 Snack Ideas:

  • Smoothies are a great solution because they are already digested/blended for easy absorption.  See sample smoothie recipes.
  • Energy Bar: You can make your own (see bar recipes) or find a quality store bought brand (see my favorite bars)
  • 1 banana and a spoonful of nut butter
  • 1 slice of whole grain or gluten free toast with nut butter (add blueberries or banana slices on top if desired)

💡 Water:   Drink at least 8 oz of water prior to exercise and drink water throughout your workout.  If you exercise in the morning, drink 1-2 cups of water first thing in the morning (definitely before coffee consumption).
