Update on my Autoimmune Disease

It’s been almost 2 years since I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I’ve made some significant lifestyle changes and been monitoring my thyroid antibodies.  I’m excited to share my results with you (because they are pretty amazing)!✨

First, I need to explain that my autoimmune condition was caught early – thank goodness.🙏 
As a proactive nutritionist, I am lucky to have minimal symptoms.  The only factor that I need to keep tabs on is my thyroid antibodies.  If I can reduce my antibody response, I’ll prevent my immune system from attacking my thyroid.  It’s been interesting tracking my my labs in relation to my daily habits.

So, here’s a funny (and embarrassing and frustrating story):
After my diagnosis, I focused on minimizing gluten to see how that would affect my antibodies.  For 3 months, I took out all gluten.  I always thought I did not eat much gluten and processed carbs but once I got serious about it, I realized that it lingered in a lot more than I thought (especially when I was eating the kid’s leftovers).

So, after 3 proud months of minimal gluten, I retested my antibodies. I had my blood drawn and while waiting for the results, there was a special occasion.  I went for it… I ate pizza and cake. 🍕🍰 I thoroughly enjoyed and didn’t care since I finished my 3-month experiment.  Then, the doctor’s office called and told me that they messed up and did the wrong labs.  I was PISSED but what could I do?  I retested within the week hoping my gluten bender wouldn’t skew the results too much. 

But guess what… My thyroid antibody value quadrupled!

This means that my immune system was not happy and if I continued on this path, my thyroid would be a mess.

So for the next 3 months, I redid my gluten experiment.  And I continued with my normal healthy habits and stress management self-care. My thyroid antibody value came down (to almost normal) – Yay!🎉  
I believe that this proved that I am quite sensitive to gluten and for my long-term health, it would make sense to stay off.

I’ve done more experiments and the only one that has seemed to help is adding 200 mcg of Selenium daily.  Not 100% sure, but I believe this is the factor that has gotten my labs down to normal!  Yep, I am no longer showing ANY signs of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. 🎉🎉

I try not to take anything for granted.
I realize that when you have an autoimmune disease, your physical and mental health can slide FAST.

🌞  I am grateful for my healthy lifestyle that makes me happy.
🌞  I am grateful for having the knowledge to find real solutions.
