Betsy’s Top 4 Supplements (with recommended doses)

You’ll notice that I do not emphasize supplements a lot.  In fact, when working with clients, supplementation is usually the last topic I touch on.  Vitamins and nutritional supplements are used to “supplement” your diet.  Your daily diet and lifestyle habits are #1, HOWEVER there are a few key supplements that are important!

What to ask yourself and your doctor:

  • Have you had your Vitamin D and B12 levels tested? If your doctor requests these labs, your insurance will most likely cover it.  For Vitamin D, the normal range is usually 30-100ng/ml.  Aim for the upper end (at least 60ng/ml).
  • Do you eat 5-9 servings of organic fruits and vegetables daily and 2-3 servings of cold ocean fish a week?  Unfortunately, today’s average diet (filled with processed foods, sugar and chemicals) is impossible to meet the minimum daily values for all nutrients.
  • Did you know that it is usually a waste of money to buy cheap supplements from chain stores?  Most likely, the nutrients will be in low doses and will not absorb well.  Pharmaceutical grade supplements that are USP (United States Pharmacopeia) verified are the best.

Betsy’s Top 4 Supplements:

  1. Ortho Multi: This is my favorite well balanced potent multi that absorbs well.  I usually recommend 1-2 softgels at a meal.
  2. Probiotics, 8 Billion: Think of probiotics as your multi for your GI tract and immune system.  Not only do they promote healthier bowels but they are beneficial for digestive problems, UTI’s, and preventing overgrowth of candida. For a maintenance dose, I usually recommend 1 cap at bedtime.  For clients with irritable bowel issues, I recommend a higher dose probiotic.
  3. Vitamin D, 2000 IU: 85% of Americans are deficient in D!  There is a long list of chronic illnesses related to D deficiency, like Alzheimer’s, Asthma, Cancer, Chrohn’s, Depression, Diabetes, Eczema, Heart Disease, Hypertension, Infertility, IBS, Migraines, Osteoporosis, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, plus many more.  Make sure to get tested!  I usually recommend 2000-5000IU/day depending on labs.
  4. Omega 3 Ultra: It is rare that people eat enough Omega 3 fatty acids. Aim for 1000mg of EPA & DHA (not fish oil total). This equals 1-2 softgels/day of my product. Omega 3 fish oil helps joint and connective tissue function, promotes cardiovascular health (Triglyceride and lipid metabolism), helps stabilize blood sugar and mood, and improves memory.
