Frozen Yogurt vs Ice Cream

Truth About Frozen Yogurt…

Many peope believe that frozen yogurt is a healthy alternative to hard or soft serve ice cream.  I am sorry to burst your bubble, but it is in fact no better than its full-fat counterpart.  Some frozen yogurt versions claim to be fat free, sugar free or contain probiotics, but they are no better for the belly (digestion and waistline) than an average ice yogurt-toppingscream.

  1. Some frozen yogurts claim to contain probiotic organisms that aid in digestion. These healthy bacteria rarely survive due to complications during frozen yogurt processing and extreme temperatures.
  2. Many of the sugar-free varieties contain alternative sweeteners which should be avoided at all cost. When the fat is reduced, it is substituted for additional sweeteners to compromise for lost flavor. Artificial sweeteners are detrimental to our waistlines as well as our digestive systems.
  3. In general, frozen yogurt contains more sugar than full fat ice cream.  Again, when fat is reduced, extra sugar is added for flavor.  I was shocked to find that even Plain flavored varieties still contain 20 grams of sugar or more!
  4. Serving size goes out the window when toppings are loaded on this treat. Just a reminder: Candy, granola, syrups, and fruit may add hundreds of calories and many grams of sugar by the time you get to the register.

Bottomline:  Whether you like ice cream or frozen yogurt, they are both loaded with sugar and empty calories so your portion size is very important.  Make sure to pick a product with quality ingredients.  And stay away from artificial sweeteners.
