Heartburn? Get off meds naturally!

Many people suffer from heartburn.  The good news is that it is preventable.  Most of my clients are able to get off acid reducing medications and control heartburn through diet and lifestyle changes alone!   Here are the most common causes and tips to reduce heartburn.

Possible Causes of Heartburn:

  • Mindless eating – not chewing well
  • Eating too late at night
  • Having big gaps between meals
  • Overeating
  • Eating then going to sleep
  • Stress
  • Not enough sleep
  • Guzzling water with meals
  • Unhealthy beverages, like alcohol, coffee, and soda
  • Inflammatory foods, like gluten, dairy and soy

How to Reduce Heartburn:

  • Eat small frequent meals.
  • Pack nutrient dense snacks to fill in the gaps.
  • Eat foods that help keep your pH alkaline.
  • Eat less junk foods and processed foods.
  • Experiment with a gluten and dairy free diet for 2-4 weeks.
  • Drink more water and cut down on soda, alcohol and coffee.
  • Be mindful of what you are eating.
  • Chew your food well and relax.  Try taking 3 deep breaths before meal time.
  • Get enough sleep: it is vital for your overall health, for your body to heal, help digest, and to recharge for the next day.
  • Yoga/meditation can reduce stress and aid digestion.
  • Digestive enzymes help with digestion.
  • Aloe vera is cooling and aids in healing gut lining.
  • Probiotics promote good bacteria growth in the gut which boosts immunity.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother has been shown to reduce heartburn.
  • Kombucha promotes a healthy gut and it tastes great.
