Is Your Morning Routine Damaging Your Metabolism?

As an experienced nutritionist, I have found that most people mess up in the mornings.  Does coffee drive you to gecoffee wake upt your day started?  For most people, they need coffee first thing in the morning.  I understand why – the smell, the boost of energy, and a nice poop.

However, coffee first thing in the morning will damage your metabolism.  Think about it… You have been sleeping and fasting for about 12 hours or more. If you have a healthy metabolism, you should wake up feeling thirsty and hungry.  Instead of fueling your metabolism with water and nourishment, you drink coffee which dehydrates you and depletes your appetite.  Therefore, you are dehydrated and your metabolism is still not fueled (maybe for hours).

The good news is that you can make a few tweaks to your morning routine and it will save your metabolism.  Remember, you don’t have to make these changes overnight.  You may have to slowly train yourself to be hungry in the morning.

  1. Drink water first thing in the morning (hydrate).  Warm water with lemon has been shown to stimulate digestion.
  2. Aim to eat breakfast within 1 hour of rising.  Here are some of my favorite balanced breakfast ideas.
  3. If you like, continue to drink your coffee but have it with breakfast.  Tea is a wonderful alternative to coffee.  Learn more about coffee vs tea.
