Santa Barbara Farmer’s Market

As a guy who spent the majority of my childhood working at the Santa Barbara Farmers Market at my families organic produce stand ( 11 years ), I’ve been lucky enough to learn the ins and outs and all the little secrets of the market. Here are a few tips to get you through your next shopping day.

1. Look for Tom Sheperd’s stand, he is one of the first to start farming organically in Santa Barbara  and has some of the most beautiful produce out there and I’m not just saying that because I’m related to him. He is also happy to direct you to his favorite farm stands which is a big bonus.

2. Not everybody advertises that they are organic, don’t be afraid to ask.

3. Don’t worry if organic farmers are not certified organic. The certification process is something that a lot of organic farmers are against and a lot of the best organic farmers are not certified.

4. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring cash, just go to the managers stand, swipe your credit card and get farmers market tokens, they work great!!

5. Bring your own reusable shopping bags or cart to make you shopping day easier.

6. The market has expanded greatly over the years and has lots of stuff besides fruits and vegetables. You should first go to the market before your local grocery store to check on new products like red meats, game meats, seafood or shellfish, locally made cheeses, nuts, fruit juices, organic oils, the list keeps growing. Just remember to take advantage of the wonderful local farm products we have in S.B.
