How to Set Realistic Goals

We all know the typical New Year’s Resolutions.  People choose broad goals (“lose 10 pounds” or “exercise more”) with minimal long-term results. Instead of making unrealistic New Years Resolutions, let’s look at things in a different light this year.  Follow my simple guide below and pick just one or two realistic resolution for yourself. #1 Step:  Choose your theme.  Do you want to focus on your diet, exercise, smoking, marriage, family life, or mentality? #2 Step:  Ask yourself the question Why?  Why do I struggle with this resolution?  What is holding me back?  If there are a bunch of reasons, write them down.IMG_0334 (2) #3 Step:  With these answers, pick one or two that you’d like to conquer.  Now make a specific resolution to solve that problem (and follow through with it)!

Once you break down your broad resolutions into smaller tasks, they are much easier to accomplish!

My Example:

#1:   I’d like to work on my relationship with my kids.  I’d like to be more patient and have more fun with them.

#2:   Why is this hard for me?…  I am juggling a lot.  I don’t have enough time for myself or daily tasks.  I feel tired after work and don’t feel like cooking dinner.

#3:   Once I thought long and hard about these problems, I thought of a doable solution…

My Realistic Resolution:

I am going to set my alarm for 6am.  This is a big deal for me because I never use an alarm.  But if I wake up earlier, our family won’t be as rushed.  With some extra time in the AM, I’ll pack snacks for work to keep me energized.  And I’ll make a plan for dinner and prep a few things in the morning.
